  • All Of A Twitter

It's something I've always looked at and come away afterwards scratching my head in confused interest. Twitter is something I've never been sure about, being quite undecided whether or not the hype that surrounded it was deserved or not. So, as a bit of an experiment, I've gone and joined the dark side, so to speak, and grabbed myself an account there. While it's not my first choice of name (or second, as both of those seem to have gone to a couple of protected Twitter accounts), http://twitter.com/AshleyJSheridan suits me well enough. I'll be manually keeping this site and Twitter in synch with my updates for the next week or so, until I can find a bit of time to create some proper integration. This should give me a great opportunity though to really play about with the API it offers, as I don't feel I more than dipped my toes last time I used it.

  • PHP Frameworks

Although I've had experience using CakePHP before, a recent project has led me out of necessity to learn to develop with CodeIgniter. So far I'm pretty pleased with what I'm seeing of it, and it's sped up my project development quite a bit, although at the moment it's hard to say by exactly how much, as it has to take into account the time spent learning how to use CodeIgniter too.

  • Browser FUD From Microsoft

I've been looking for a way to get IE8 on my Fedora machine for a little while now, as the IES4Linux project is becoming a bit dated, and only offers an unstable IE7 to play with at best. If you're wondering why I would even consider using a browser that has a long-running history of being insecure and one of the least standards-compliant of the big players, then I would have to say at once two words: web development, and then follow this up quickly by explaining that there are still many websites that are IE-only (on the Internet it's banks that seem to get a hard time especially with this one, but I know that at the very least HSBC and Natwest both work quite well on Firefox.) After looking into the problem a bit more, I think my best option would be to go with a virtual machine of Windows XP inside of Linux so that I can use IE8, allowing me to install other Windows-only software should I ever need to, although this will mean I might need to upgrade the paltry 1GB I have installed on my machine. Linux doesn't need huge amounts of memory to function correctly, but Windows does, and Windows won't have access to all the memory I have if it's running as a VM.

  • Why I No Longer Need Windows

I was forced into having to upgrade my main machines OS after a system update that went slightly wrong. I probably should have realised after last time I tried to upgrade my Fedora system. The problem? Well, somehow the update had killed all sound coming from the Fedora 7 install. This is the machine I use for listening to music and watching video clips, so it's not a good situation to be in at all!

What have I been saying recently?

@firefox even faster than CTRL/command click, middle click with the scroll wheel. Great for closing tabs too.

Back again at the office for #tmwhackday tension mounting and last minute "tweaks" being made. S*** just got real!

So, after getting through over a dozen pizzas at #tmwhackday , this is what greets me at home! http://t.co/jKmvE54Y
