  • Just one of those days

I knew for a while now that my laptop was in trouble; it was taking more time to do things, constantly running out of disk space, and more crashes than I'd have liked (not as much as Vista, but more than my main PC!) I was waiting for a bit of free time before I rebuilt it, but it became a necessity today, as mosr of Monday was spent working very slowly while I was waiting for my laptop to catch up. The first serious warning sign however, was when I was attempting to back up the laptop's contents to a portable hard-drive, and it kept continually struggling with 'unreadable' files. Now, all of these 'bad' files were inconsequential, but the fact that I could not even back them up was ringing some major alarm bells. Final confirmation of my worst fears came when I attempted to rebuild the machine; the hard-drive was knackered. Not one of the Linux distros I tried on it was even able to format the disk, let alone install an OS onto it. This alone took most of my morning up, for which I was thankful of having a desktop machine on which to do my actual work. As soon as I could, I headed to the nearest computer shop, realising only when I'd closed the door behind me that I'd locked myself out again!

  • Browser Testing

I had planned to do some browser testing this week, but things got a little bit busy because of my new job. The whole of last week was spent finishing up bits of work at my last job, which wasn't helped by the fact that several people decided that they would send me a slew of new updates to make to systems I managed, giving me a weeks worth of work to do in a few days, because they know I wouldn't be around to do it for long. As such, I've not had the free time I needed to properly test out the browsers I wanted to. I'll look to test them out this week ahead and let you know how I get on.

  • Browser Wars!

I was sent a very interesting link earlier, which shows just how far the browser wars have come. Microsoft has launched a competition in Australia, offering up $10,000 AUD to the person who can find the location of said cash by following the clues, in a DaVinci Code kind of way. The catch? Well, you have to be using their browser to see the clues, and their very latest one at that. If you're using anything other than IE8, then you will get a message saying something like But you'll never find it using.... Thing is, even Microsoft doesn't even seem to be too sure what browser you are using. I tested the site out on a variety of browsers both on my Linux laptop and work Windows PC. The results of how well it recognised various browsers are below:

  • Accessibility

Of late, I've seen a lot of developers make more effort towards accessible web development. While this is not a new thing, it is gaining popularity among many developers who previously either weren't aware of the ideology behind it, or the legal implications it can have.

What have I been saying recently?

@firefox even faster than CTRL/command click, middle click with the scroll wheel. Great for closing tabs too.

Back again at the office for #tmwhackday tension mounting and last minute "tweaks" being made. S*** just got real!

So, after getting through over a dozen pizzas at #tmwhackday , this is what greets me at home! http://t.co/jKmvE54Y
