Spam Protection

Well, more spam relate shenanigans this week, spoofed to make it look like it came from my own email account no less. The last time this happened I published all the email addresses I could find relating to the spam on this very blog, but it's since occurred to me that this could effect me quite negatively with search engines. You see, modern search engines, or more accurately, their spiders, are getting quite astute at recognising dodgy domains, such as those containing malware, or content copied from other sites. It is not so hard to imagine that email addresses tied to these domains will also be treated as such, so my posting of them on my website will likely do me no favours. What I'll probably end up doing instead is using those email addresses to sign up to various websites so that they might be harvested by the very nefarious characters using them. Of course, this doesn't tackle the wider problem; the spam will still exist and clog the Internet up for everyone.

You might assume that I get a lot of junk email come to my inbox, but in fact the opposite is true. To date, I have had only 3 spam emails, compared to over 5800 legitimate ones. I don't use any spam catcher on my machine, and my ISP filters nothing out either. The reason for having such a good ratio is simply down to my careful use of my email address online. I use it to sign up to few online services, and even then, I tend to stick to those I can trust. As a further layer of protection, each occurance of it on this site is protected with a little email protection script I put together a while ago. This script, not only hides the address in an external JavaScript file, but encrypts it too. I thought this was fine, until I read online that Google may already be capable of 'reading' basic JavaScript content. This is worrying only because if Google can do it, then spam bots can't be far behind. I'm hoping that my efforts will work for a while yet, but I may soon have to develop the script further to counteract the advancements being made by the other side.
