Why I No Longer Need Windows

I was forced into having to upgrade my main machines OS after a system update that went slightly wrong. I probably should have realised after last time I tried to upgrade my Fedora system. The problem? Well, somehow the update had killed all sound coming from the Fedora 7 install. This is the machine I use for listening to music and watching video clips, so it's not a good situation to be in at all!

Fedora 7 is looking pretty dated now, especially with 12 out in beta right now, and I had a copy of 11 hanging around so I thought it might not be a bad idea to give it a spin.

The whole install process lasted about 20 minutes from start to finish, and left me with a standard install of Fedora 11 with a standard setup of software, which beats the hell out of any Windows install! Getting the system set up to the way I wanted did take a little while longer, adding all the software I wanted, and configuring things to be the way I wanted them. The new build was a good chance to test out the new features of KWin, a window manager with effects like Compiz, by compiling the kernel with support for my NVidia graphics card.

While I was into trying out the new capabilities of my system, I thought I'd give WoW a test. I'd heard that this can be made to work on Linux, but had never tried it out before. There are a few issues with sound occasionally, but on the whole it's pretty responsive. So now the only reason for having a Windows install has gone, this is a chance to finally go open source all the way!
